Here’s to Joe!
The cover of this year’s gift guide is a watercolor work by Joe Miller. His mother said he
was “born in a hurry and never slowed down
from there.” Indeed, he was born in a car
right outside Boone Drug Co. on King Street
in Downtown Boone. Later, that same location would be where he would work
as a pharmacist, hold court with the
local lawyers and retirees at the soda
fountain, and the place he started
Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff, an extension of
his passion for art.
He was quick-witted, and Joe's
twinkling eyes were a sure giveaway
for some shenanigans that always
seemed to happen when he was
around. As a long-time friend of
the Cooper family, they had many
occasions to run into each other at both
business and community functions. He was
instrumental in bringing the Mast Store to
Downtown Boone.
Joe was a local legend in the High Country and left us too soon on September 6, 2023.
